JAVA RUNTIME ENVIRONMENT

Here are the steps you will follow to install the Java runtime environment.

First, go to www.java.com.

1. Click on the orange “Download Now >>” button beneath the “Java Software Free Download” heading.

2. Click the “Download” button beside the “Windows (XPI)” label. 

3. Your browser may warn you that it is preventing the site from installing software on your computer. This is the default setting on many browsers.

For example, if you are using the Firefox browser, you may see the following message at the top of the screen “To protect your computer, Firefox prevented this site (www.java.com) from installing software on your computer.” Take appropriate action to enable your browser to install software from www.java.com. In the case of Firefox, you click the “Edit Options” button and then click the “Allow” button for www.java.com.

4. When you see the following “Security Warning” popup window, click the “Yes” button.

5. Then choose the “Typical setup” option and click on the “Accept” button.

6. After Java has been installed, www.java.com provides a “Verify Installation” link on the download page which you can click on to verify that Java has been successfully installed on your PC.

If the installation does not succeed

If, for some reason, your browser was unable to complete the automatic installation of the Java runtime environment, you can still do this, using the “Manual Download” alternative.  It is a fairly simple process.

1. Return to the home page at www.java.com

2. Click on the “Manual Download” link to the right of the orange
“Download Now >>” button.

3. Click the “Download” button beside the “Windows (Online Installation)” label.

4. Save the EXE file (it has a filename that will be something like
jre-1_5_0_06-windows-i586-p-iftw.exe) to your desktop, or to any other convenient location on your disk.

5. Double-click the new “JRE” icon on your desktop. Or, if you saved the EXE file to a different location, use Windows Explorer to double-click on the EXE filename.  This will start the installation process.

6. When prompted, choose the “typical” setup alternative.
